Top Ten Tuesday: Inspiring Quotes

top ten tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly event hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

There are too many amazing quotes and beautiful sentences in this world of books. It was hard to decide what quotes to chose, but I managed to spread myself out to 10 of my all-time favourite books and pick one quote from each that I love and that inspires me either because of the beautiful words or because of what they mean to me. Though that didn’t stop me from adding a couple bonus quotes at the end.

1. “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”

~ Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K Rowling~

2. ‘…the flavour of [her] kiss – bittersweet and strange – stayed with me all the way back uptown, swaying and sleepy as I sailed home on the bus, melting with sorrow and loveliness, a starry ache that lifted me up above the windswept city like a kite: my head in the rainclouds, my heart in the sky.’

~Theo Decker in The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt~

3. “When did we see each other face-to-face? Not until you saw into my cracks and I saw into yours. Before that, we were just looking at ideas of each other, like looking at your window shade but never seeing inside. But once the vessel cracks, the light can get in. The light can get out.”

~Quentin Jacobson in Paper Towns by John Green~

4.’The time has to be right and the heart willing.’

~The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides~

5.’What I’m feeling, I think, is joy. And it’s been some time since I’ve felt that blinkered rush of happiness. This might be one of those rare events that lasts, one that’ll be remembered and recalled as months and years wind and ravel. One of those sweet, significant moments that leaves a footprint in your mind.’

~Charlie in Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey

6. ‘She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.’

~Park in Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell~

7.’You do not write your life with words…You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do.’

~A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness~

8.“… if you’re someone who knows the worst thing can happen at any time, aren’t you also someone who knows the best thing can happen at any time, too?”

~Joe to Lennie in The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson~

9. ‘The light, full and smooth, lay like a gold rind over the turf, the furze and yew bushes, the few windstunted thorn trees. From the ridge, the light seemed to cover all the slope below, drowsy and still. But down in the grass itself, between the bushes, in that thick forest trodden by the beetle, the spider and the hunting shrew, the moving light was like a wind that danced among them to set them scurrying and weaving.’

~Watership Down by Richard Adams~

10. ‘Not all those who wander are lost.’

~The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R Tolkien~

Bonus quotes:

11. ‘We accept the love we think we deserve.’

~The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky~

12.“We kill all the caterpillars, then complain there are no butterflies.”

~The Dead of Night by John Marsden~

  1. I’ve been seeing Dumbledore’s quote about the Mirror of Erised around a lot this week. It’s so spot on. I almost included it, but went with another J.K. Rowling quote, otherwise it would have been all her and J.R.R. Tolkien.
